The “OKUMA: Back to the school desk” open day event took place in the G building lecture room and workshop of the Department of Manufacturing Science and Engineering on 30 March, organised by Smartus Ltd and organised the department. The lectures covered OKUMA’s innovative technical solutions for modern machine tools in front of many guests comprising industrial partners and the Department’s staff and students. Besides Smartus CEO János Mátyás and colleagues, OKUMA Europe GmbH’s Area Manager, Tim Schmidt presented OKUMA’s past, present and future plans.
The presentations (and lunch break) have been followed by machine tool and process demonstrations in the G building’s newly installed cyber-physical production system. Besides introducing the OKUMA Multus B250 II multifunctional turning machine, which was installed directly on the occasion of the open day, the Department’s OKUMA LB3000 EX II turning centre was introduced, too. A special ability of the LB3000 EX II machine tool was the automatic tool correction, which was enabled solely through the communication between the machine tool and a Mitutoyo CrystaPlus 574 coordinate measuring machine (CMM). Following the measurement of the part, which has been just finished by the machine tool, the Mitutoyo MCOSMOS software determined the necessary rate of tool correction based on the data acquired by the CMM without any interaction from the operating personnel.
The Department thanks Smartus Ltd for the event’s organisation. We are looking forward to the continuation of this exceptional event.
